Handmade artists book, A2 size, unique.

a play of light and shade

A book of graphite rubbings on paper, taken directly from garments being sold and made in and around Brick Lane ― signed and/or with company stamps.

Peopling of London Exhibition, Museum of London, 1994

The clothing and textile industries in the East End of London have for centuries been a major source of livelihood for different immigrant communities. My interest in the link between textiles and immigration arose because my father, himself an immigrant to Britain from the former Yugoslavia, worked in the garment trade as a tailor for forty years.

The graphite rubbings and accompanying comments contained in the book were made during visits to garment manufacturers, wholesalers and retailers from the immediate area around the Spitalfields Heritage Centre, 19 Princelet Street, E1.
